Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the chief of Dera Sacha Sodha has stated that he will challenge today’s verdict in high court. He was sentenced to a 10-year term in jail a few hours back by a special CBI court.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim is an accused in a rape case since 2002. After a 15 year long judicial proceeding, he was finally convicted on Friday and the punishment was handed over today, which included 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 65000. In the Rohtak central jail, Ram Rahim is prisoner number 1997 and for now, he has been kept in a cell alone, the cell is enough to accommodate 12 prisoners.

Reportedly, at the time of court proceedings today, Ram Rahim had broken down asking for leniency in handing him the verdict. His counsel had also stated that he has worked for the betterment of people throughout his life and that there should be leniency while giving him punishment, on the other hand, the prosecution had requested for the maximum amount of punishment so that the case sets an example for the others and restores trust in the judiciary.
