Special CBI court on Monday gave out its verdict on self-proclaimed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim. The court, which had set up its bench within the premises of Rohtak Jail, sentenced Gurmeet Ram Rahim for 10 years in jail. He was accused of a rape case that took place in 2002.

The CBI court had held him guilty of the rape charges on 25th August and had secured the verdict for today. Today’s proceedings started with an argument where the bench had given 10 minutes each to the prosecution and defence. At one side, the prosecution asked for the maximum jail term for him, the defence requested to take his social ventures into consideration and be a little lenient in announcing the verdict.

Before this, the area near Rohtak jail was imposed with section 144 and no one, other than the authorised individuals were allowed to go near the jail. The police had issued orders of shoot-at-sight for Ram Rahim’s followers, in case they try to take law in their hands and repeat a situation like the one on 25th August.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim will continue to serve his jail term within the premises of Rohtak jail. As he is accused of a rape case, he will not even be allowed a parole or bail. After the announcement of his sentence, he will now have to undergo a medical test and soon after, he will be given his jail uniform and allotted a cell in the jail.

Amid the ongoing developments, Vipassana Insaan, Dera chairperson has requested the followers to remain calm and respect the verdict given against Ram Rahim. Though it is a very unlikely scenario, the government has readied itself for all possible situations. CRPF and the state police in Haryana and Punjab have been patrolling ever since last night and Army has been kept on standby, in case the situation gets out of control.

Outside the Rohtak jail too, ther a is heavy deployment of security forces and media personnel. The government has given clear instructions of keeping the situation under control and it does not seem to be in any mood to let the situation go out of hands.
