Speaking on the issue of NRC on Thursday, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda said that if such exercise is executed all over the nation then India’s relation with the neighboring countries will suffer a setback.
As quoted by ANI, HD Deve Gowda said, “The government is not taking into consideration the consequences of the NRC implementation, they want to implement NRC across the nation. If it gets implemented, it will not only create problems in the country but also strain our relations with neighboring countries.”
The leader also said to learn from the Assam experience. The latest publication of the NRC list on 31 August excluded 19 lakh people out of its purview.
His comments came after a day when Union Home Minister Amit Shah had talked of implementing NRC like exercise across the nation. However, Amit Shah had delineated the difference between Citoznehip Bill and NRC. As quoted by ANI, he said, “NRC has no such provision which says that certain religions will be excluded from it. All citizens of India irrespective of religion will figure in the NRC list. The NRC is different from Citizenship Amendment Bill.”
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also launched a scathing attack over the remarks of Amit Shah. While addressing a public meeting at Sagardighi in Murshidabad district, she said that her state will not execute any such exercise.
She further said that the NRC exercise was part of the Assam Accord, and therefore it cannot be implemented across India. Speaking at the event, She said, “A few people are trying to foment trouble in the state by saying that NRC exercise will be carried out in Bengal. I would like to make it very clear that we will never allow the NRC exercise in Bengal. We won’t allow anybody to divide people on the basis of religion.”
