Hearing the bail petition of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today, Supreme Court said that the final call will be taken by the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. Congress leader P Chidambaram has sought an urgent hearing in the case.

P Chidambaram has approached the Supreme Court after he was denied the relief in the INX media case from Delhi High court on Monday. The three-judge bench headed by Justice NV Ramana said that the Congress leader’s request would be sent to the CJI, following which he will pronounce his decision.

Chidambaram has been under arrest in Tihar jail since September 5. The leader was arrested by the CBI officials on August 21 in a high-chase political drama.

On Monday, the High Court denied granting any bail to the leader on the ground that he might influence the witnesses. Even after accepting that there is no such possible scope pf tampering the investigation, the court said “But since the investigation is at an advanced stage and Chidambaram being an influential person, the possibility of influencing witnesses could not be ruled out.

In 2017, top investigative agencies have filed an FIR in connection to the alleged irregularities in fund clearance to INX media house through FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board). It was alleged that the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram inappropriately cleared the fund of Rs. 305 crore to the company.

CBI has been investigating the corruption allegations against P Chidambaram while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is inquiring into money laundering allegations in the case.
