Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed their discontent over the incident and condemned the move taken by the administration. He called the arrest an unprovoked action that is a blow to democracy. Ghulam Ahmed Mir was put under house arrest in Jammu in the afternoon of Sunday.
Rahul Gandhi questioned the ruling government about stopping this madness. Speaking on the matter, Ghulam Nabi Azad questioned the condition of normalcy in the valley. He said that even though the administration is testifying the claims of a peaceful state in the region, then why the leaders are not being allowed to hold a press conference?
Following the repeal of Article 370, as much as 300 political leaders, including former Chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, have been put under custody for avoiding political tensions.
The political heat in the erstwhile state has reached a new height with the arrest of leaders. Previously, many leaders have been also sent back from Srinagar airport. Ghulam Nabi Azad was one of them. In the same context, CPI General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI (M) General Secretary D Raja were also illegally detained at Srinagar airport on Friday. CPI (Communist Party of India) organized a demonstration in Bhubaneshwar protesting the move.
The Centre has scrapped Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir region. It has also divided the former state into 2 Union territories and deployed over 40,000 troops in Jammu and Kashmir to deal with the situation.
