Karnataka MPs to challenge formation of CWMA in Parliament

HD Kumaraswamy, Chief Minister of Karnataka and JD(S) leader called a meeting during his Delhi stay and requested the MPs of Karnataka to demand a debate on the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) as the state is against its formation.

Kumaraswamy told the MPs to challenge the issue in the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament. They will ask for a debate session when the Central government will raise the notification on the formation of CWMA regarding the order from the Supreme Court in both the Houses.

On June 22, the Centre composed a nine-member Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.

Karnataka MPs acquiesce that the formation of CWMA was an “injustice” to the state as it was set up without any ‘consultation’ with the state government.

DK Shivakumar, State Water Resources Minister said “Parliament is supreme. Since we have the opportunity, we will demand a debate on the matter in this session.” He also added,”There was no need to form the authority so soon. The authority was set up without consulting the state.”

The Prime Minister had earlier asked all the MPs to put forward their issues in the Parliament for discussion.
