Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, bringing a 100-fold increase in internet speed to the residents. This landmark project, worth over Rs 1,150 crore, marks a turning point in Lakshadweep’s development, encompassing sectors like technology, energy, water resources, healthcare, and education.
For the first time since independence, Lakshadweep will be connected through a dedicated Submarine Optical Fiber Cable (OFC), marking a paradigm shift in the islands’ communication infrastructure. With faster and more reliable internet, residents can now look forward to advancements in telemedicine, e-governance, educational initiatives, digital banking, and even digital currency usage.
Prime Minister Modi, addressing the gathering, fulfilled his promise made in 2020 of ensuring fast internet within 1,000 days. He stated, “The KLI-SOFC project will unlock new possibilities and opportunities for the people of Lakshadweep. Improved internet access will lead to better government services, medical treatment, education, and digital banking. This will also strengthen Lakshadweep’s potential as a logistics hub.”
The Prime Minister further assured the islanders that the government is committed to improving their quality of life. He emphasized, “Lakshadweep will play a significant role in building a prosperous India. We will continue to take every step to ensure ease of living, travel, and doing business for the islanders.”
The KLI-SOFC project was conceptualized and fast-tracked by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) after recognizing the need for high-capacity connection with the mainland. The submarine cable stretches 1,868 kilometers across 11 islands, including Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, and Minicoy. Funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), the project was executed by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
The high-speed broadband connectivity expected through this project will have a ripple effect across various sectors. E-governance initiatives, tourism promotion, educational resources, improved healthcare delivery, and enhanced business opportunities are just some of the anticipated benefits. This digital transformation will contribute to a better standard of living and accelerate social and economic development in the islands.
With the KLI-SOFC project coming online, Lakshadweep embarks on a new era of connectivity and growth. This infrastructure development promises to bridge the digital divide and unleash the potential of the island chain, unlocking a brighter future for its residents.
