Maharashtra has yet again witnessed another demonstration of protest by the farmers in Kalyan in Thane district on Thursday. The roots of this protest goes long back to the pre-independence times, when the British acquired 1,600 acres of land for building an air field. The farmer groups claim that the land was given back to them, while state ministry and defence ministry claims it to be theirs. Thane collector said that according to the records the land belonged to the defence ministry.

The dispute over the land triggered again as the Navy is trying to build compound wall from past few weeks.

The people demonstrating the protest said that they were just holding a peaceful march, but the police thrust lathi charge on the protesters unannounced. The angry farmers than attacked the police and burnt vehicles. However, according to Thane Police Commissioner Parambir Singh, the attack by the protesters was pre planned and the police has filed an FIR with an attempt to murder charges and will soon arrest the people responsible for the unrest.

Around 12 farmers suffered serious injury during the protest and many policemen are also reported to be suffering.
