In order to establish gratitude and patriotism towards the country, Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the theaters across India to play national anthem before the start of the movie. The bench comprising of Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy stated that all the people present in the theaters at the time of national anthem are obliged to stand in order to show respect for the anthem and the country. It also added that the doors of theaters shall remain closed so that no disturbance is caused during the anthem, also, the screen of the theater should show the national flag during the procession.

Clarifying the decision, the bench added that the decision will instill a feeling of patriotism and nationalism among the countrymen. It gave a time of 10 days to the theaters to comply with the orders issued. The statement said that it is about time for citizens to realize the duty to show respect to the national anthem.

The statement, however had no mention about the situation where this order is not followed. It did not give any information about any kind of punishment for not obliging to the supreme court’s decision. It is yet to be seen on how do the theater owners and public ensures in a smooth execution of the plan.

As soon as the news came out, people had different views. National Anthem phrase started to trend on twitter and people were tweeting in support as well as against the decision. While some were happy supporting the move, others termed it as a decision of a dictatorship and even mentioned that supreme court should spend its time solving the long list of pending cases rather than giving decisions on such low priority cases.
