National Film Awards 2020: Suriya and Ajay Devgn share Best Actor award, MP wins Most Film Friendly State award

The 68th National Film Awards announced the winners for the year 2020 here on Friday in New Delhi. Best Actor award for 2020 is shared between Suriya for ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and Ajay Devgn for the Hindi movie ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’. The Jury comprised eminent filmmakers and film personalities from across the Indian cine-world. 

The National Film Awards will be handed out in a ceremony later this year.

The National Film Awards are given in five categories, they are: Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Feature films, Non-feature films, Best writing in Cinema and the Most Film Friendly State.

Tamil movie ‘Soorarai Pottru’ Best Feature Film award has been bagged by the director Sudha Kongara. The movie is based on events in the life of Simplifly Deccan founder G Gopinath, also won Best Feature Film, Best Actress for Aparna Balamurali, Best Screenplay and Best Background Score. 

‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ grabs the Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. This movie is a historical film about legendary Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, which won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Best Actor award for 2020 is shared between Suriya for ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and Ajay Devgn for the Hindi movie ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’. This is Suriya’s first National Award and Ajay Devgn’s third- he won Best Actor for his 1998 film Zakhm and 2002’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh. 

Manoj Muntashir has won the award for Best Lyrics for the Hindi movie ‘Saina’. 

Madhya Pradesh wins Most Film Friendly State award while Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh get Special Mention. ‘The Longest Kiss’ by Kishwar Desai wins Best Book on Cinema for the year while Malayalam book ‘MT Anunahvangalude Pusthakam’ and Odia book ‘Kali Paine Kalira Cinema’ win special mention.

The awards were announced by Chitrartha Singh, Chairperson, Non-Feature Jury, Anant Vijay, Chairperson, Best Writing on Cinema Jury and Shri Dharam Gulati, Feature Film Jury (Member – Central Panel) in presence of Neerja Sekhar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur has congratulated all the winners and said 2020 was a particularly difficult year for films due to the COVID pandemic, yet the nominations consisted of great works. The Minister also thanked the Jury for diligently going through the entries and selecting the best for the awards.
