New hospital to be set up near Shanti Path flyover

NEW DELHI: The Shanti Path flyover area near Moti Bagh may soon witness a multi-speciality hospital spread over 3.2 acres in a bid to decrease the demand-supply gap in health care in the national capital.

Initiated as a joint venture between the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), ministry of health and family welfare and Ram Manohar Lohiya hospital, the state-of-the-art hospital is expected to come up in then next two years.

The Centre has already cleared the project and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) will soon be signed between the civic agency, the health ministry, headed by Dr. Harsh Vardhan and RML hospital. Naresh Kumar, outgoing chairman of NDMC, said on Sunday, “The project will be an extended campus for RML, which due to lack of space was unable to expand its services.”

Currently, the space meant for the project hosts a veterinary hospital, staff quarters and a school building. These will soon be shifted. The cost for the 800-crore project will be shared between the civic agency (300 crore) and the Centre (500 crore). The primary building would feature a six-storey hospital block with three basements. An additional three-storey building would feature as the administrative block.

“While NDMC will be responsible for building the infrastructure, RML will take care of the hospital infrastructure, including furniture, equipment and manpower required to operate the facility. It’s the first time we are taking up such a project,” the chairman said, “as soon as the MoU is signed, the process of floating tenders will begin. Once the work is complete, the Cancer Institute would be the first one to be moved, soon to be followed by other departments.”

Boasting of a 300-bed space, the hospital would include a coronary care unit for cardiac patients and an intensive unit for others. “There will be a provision for round-the-clock emergency services in all broad specialities of medicine and surgeries, including a state-of-the-art trauma centre. A disaster action plan is also included which will be made operational in an unfortunate event of mass tragedy.” the chairman was quoted.

“Pensioners, employees of NDMC and their family will be given priority while accessing these services,” an official said.
