Union Budget 2019: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promises ‘Har Ghar Jal’ by 2024

Presenting the Union Budget 2019 in the Lok Sabha, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman on Friday vowed for ‘Har Ghal Jal’ and promised water to every household by the year 2024. Speaking in Lok Sabha, Finance Minister said that the newly formed Jal Shakti Ministry will work with all states to provide water to every house of rural India by the year 2024.

‘Ensuring India’s water security & providing access to safe drinking water to all Indians is a priority. A major step in this direction has been the constitution of Jal Shakti Ministry’, Finance Minister said while Presenting a Union Budget in the Lok Sabha.

She added that this new Ministry will look at the Management of our water resources and water supply in an integrated & holistic manner and will work with states to ensure ‘Har Ghar Jal’, to all rural households by 2024 under ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’.

Jal Shakti Ministry came into existence after re-organizing the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga rejuvenation. PM Modi in his portfolio allocation on introducing a new ministry, Jal Shakti Ministry, as a promise made by him during the poll campaign of the recently held national polls 2019.

The new portfolio has been allocated to BJP MP from Jodhpur Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Shekhawat in the recently held polls defeated Vaibhav Gehlot, son of sitting CM Ashok Gehlot from Jodhpur Lok Sabha Seat.

It should be noted that PM Modi during his poll campaign in Tamil Nadu has promised to introduce the Jal Shakti Ministry, to provide safe drinking water to people.

PM Modi had in April this speaking in a rally said, ‘Once we will form the government at Centre on May 23, a separate ministry for water will be created to fulfill the aspirations of the people related to water.

This was Nirmala Sitharaman’s maiden Budget Presentation and the first Budget of the second Narendra Modi-led government.
