Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway to have individual municipal body for administration

Currently, the three areas in Gautam Buddh Nagar (GBN) do not have their own municipal body.

NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh government is considering a proposal to establish a municipal body on the lines of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The proposal addresses industrial development areas of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway. The dedicated structure like a Nagar Nigam will address civic issues of the three areas.

Currently, the three areas of Gautam Buddha Nagar (GBN) do not have their own municipal body. Their authorities perform the civic functions along with the development of the cities.

According to the Industrial Development Act of 1976, every city must have its own municipal corporation. The government has written to the CEOs of the three authorities. It has asked them to submit a report on the issue without delay.

According to sources, in July, minister in charge of GBN Jai Pratap Singh recommended setting up of a separate municipal body after redressing problems faced by stakeholders in the areas.

Singh noted that the three Authorities have to look at all municipal functions. Additionally infrastructure, allotment of land, and industry promotion makes it even more difficult. There emerges a lot of neglect in all three cities due to this. Stating these problems, Singh wrote a letter to the UP chief minister, Yogi Adityanath.

Yogi Adityanath took part in a review visit on July 14 to Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway areas. He spoke of establishing a separate municipal body in accordance with the Industrial Development Act of 1976.

In September 2017, GBN district magistrate B.N Singh had also recommended separation of municipal functions for the three areas. He had at the time noted that Noida required a separate municipal body, given its proximity to Delhi, as well as the burgeoning population.

E-vehicles for Population

The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is planning to mandate 50% of vehicles used by officials to be e-vehicles. This is observed as an attempt to curb pollution. On the infrastructure front, GNIDA plans to establish an e-vehicle charging station within its premises besides 10 other stations in the first phase across the city. Additionally, development of  no-vehicle pedestrian zones will take place. Development of culture streets in these zones will then take place. “Later, more such streets will be developed to make Greater Noida a healthy and pollution-free city of the future,” said Narendra Bhooshan, CEO, GNIDA.
