In an interesting turn of events on Monday evening, it was announced that Gurmeet Ram Rahi will have to spend 20 years in Jail. Earlier, there were updates that the court has sentenced him to 10 years in jail for each of the two cases in which he was accused. However, there was no clarity over the fact whether the punishment will take place concurrently or consecutively.

Clarifying the matter, Ram Rahm’s lawyer and Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar gave 2 separate statement earlier today and stated that the total punishment is 20 years in jail and 30 lakhs of fine (10 years of jail and 15 lakhs fine in each case).

Though Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s lawyer has stated that they will move to higher court to appeal against the verdict, chances of him getting any rebate are very less. In such cases, there is no provision of bail or parole as well, that means, there will not be any other option in front of Gurmeet Ram Rahim than to serve his full 20 years of jail term, which will end in 2037.

After he was sentenced, security in the entire state of Haryana and Punjab was increased and security forces were given clear instructions to not let the situation go out of control. On 25th, when he was convicted in the case, violent protests erupted in various parts of Haryana and Punjab, leaving at least 38 dead and over 200 injured.

There were, however, no updates of any violence today from any part. CRPF and Haryana police force was deployed in high numbers and the army was kept on standby.
