Opposition parties unanimously decide Margaret Alva for Vice Presidential candidate

Mrs Margaret Alva will be the opposition’s candidate for the Vice Presidential Election. The Vice Presidential election will be conducted on the 6th of August.

Talking to media after the meeting of opposition parties in New Delhi on Sunday, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar said, 17 parties are on board for this unanimous decision. He said Mrs Margaret Alva will file the nomination on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, Pawar wrote, “Today we had talks with many colleagues of non-BJP political parties. We have decided to declare Mrs. Margaret Alvaji as the candidate for the country’s Vice Presidential election.”

Pawar took it to twitter and further tweeted, “She has been a minister, has also been a member of Rajya Sabha, and has also held the office of Governor. He has vast experience in parliamentary work and administration. That is why we have announced the name of Mrs. Margaret Alvaji.”

In another tweet he wrote, “Most of the opposition parties have extended their support to our candidate. We tried to get in touch with Mrs. Mamta Banerjee, but could not get through as she was busy with a council. With this we also contacted Arvind Kejriwal ji. His decision is yet to come.”

Mrs Alva hails from Mangaluru, Karnataka. She has been Member of Rajya Sabha four times and Lok Sabha one time. She has also served as Union Minister and Governor of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. She has authored a book titled ‘Courage & Commitment’.

Mrs Margaret Alva took to twitter to express her gratitude for nominating her name for the Vice Presidential election, “It is a privilege and an honour to be nominated as the candidate of the joint opposition for the post of Vice President of India. I accept this nomination with great humility and thank the leaders of the opposition for the faith they’ve put in me.”
