18 years ago on this day, the safest place of the nation landed up in the hands of terrorists and echoed with gunshots.

9 people were killed after five terrorists infiltrated the Parliament house in a car with labels of Parliament and Home Ministry. Leaders from across the political spectrum paid tribute to the victims of 2001 Parliament attack today.

The terrorists, belonging to terror groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, stormed into Parliament complex in New Delhi and opened fire indiscriminately.

There were about 100 Parliament members including L K Advani and Harin Pathak inside the house during the time of attack.

Five policemen, a Parliament security guard, and a gardener were killed, and 22 others were injured. A journalist who was injured while covering the attack, passed away later.

Investigations revealed involvement of four accused – Afzal Guru, Shaukat Hussain, SAR Geelani and Navjot Sandhu. Afzal Guru was given death sentence by court. He was hanged in Tihar jail complex in New Delhi, a week after the then President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea in 2013.
