PM Modi chaired a high level meeting in Morbi to review the situation in the wake of the unfortunate bridge mishap there. He directed for an independent and thorough investigation of the accident. He directed to ensure that the families of the deceased and the injured get all the necessary assistance at the earliest with full condolences.

On Sunday, October 30, 2022, the cable bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed, killing over 130 people as they all fell into the river. Rescue operations are currently being conducted.
The 150-year-old bridge located 300 km from Vadodara could take the weight of only about 125 people but there were around 400 people on the bridge when the incident happened. The Prime Minister said that the authorities must stay in touch with the affected families and ensure that they receive all possible help in this tragic hour. Officials briefed the Prime Minister on the rescue ops and the assistance provided to those affected.
The Prime Minister said the need of the hour is to conduct a detailed and extensive inquiry which will identify all aspects relating to this mishap. He also added that the key learnings from the inquiry must be implemented at the earliest.
Earlier, upon reaching Morbi, the Prime Minister directly visited the site of the bridge mishap. He went to visit the local hospital where the injured are recovering. He also interacted with those involved in rescue and relief work and lauded their fortitude.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of those killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 for those injured. PM has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
