APPM Modi to inaugurate longest rail-cum-road bridge on December 25

The much-awaited Bogibeel Bridge, which is supposed to be India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25.

The Bogibeel Bridge is expected to be a strategically important bridge and is likely to play a vital role along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge was sanctioned in 1997-98 and the foundation stone was laid by former PM H D Deve Gowda on January 22, 1997.

The project suffered from an inordinate delay in the implementation, as a result of which, the cost of construction escalated by 85 percent. Later on, the total length of the bridge was also increased to 4.94 km from the earlier 4.31 km.

The officials from the defense forces said that the bridge will enhance the national security of eastern India because it is expected to facilitate the movement of defense forces and their equipment.

An official claimed that the bridge is constructed in such a way that even a fighter jet can land on it in case of emergency.

A senior army official said that traveling to the farthest point of India’s border with China will be shortened by several hundred kilometers because of this bridge.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) chief public relations officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma said that the bridge will provide the logistical support for the Indian Army manning the border.

Sharma added that the bridge will be the lifeline of the northeastern part of the country and will facilitate connectivity between north and south banks of river Brahmaputra in the eastern region of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
