Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dedicated to the nation two newly-constructed expressways: the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and phase-1 of the Delhi-Meerut expressway.

Addressing a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhagpat city earlier today after inaugurating the two expressways, Modi said his government has completed these large projects in record time, showing its commitment towards improving infrastructure in the country. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and UP’s CM Yogi Adityanath were present at the event along with union minister Nitin Gadkari.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) is India’s first ‘smart and green’ roadway that was ordered to be constructed by the Supreme Court for the purpose of reducing pollution in the Delhi-NCR areas. The Rs. 11,000 cr. worth expressway was constructed in a record time of 17 months.

EPE is a 135-km long expressway that aims to reduce travel time around the eastern areas of Delhi from four hours to just 70 minutes. It has eight solar power plants along its pathway that generate around 4 MW of electricity. It also has an automatic toll-collection system that does not require vehicles to stop during their journeys.

This expressway has the distinction of being eco-friendly as it uses solar powered lights and has cycle tracks along each side. The government has also planted 2.5 lakh trees along the road, and these will be watered using drip irrigation technology.

PM Modi also inaugurated phase-1 of the 14-lane Delhi-Meerut expressway that was built in a record time of 18-months as well. He lauded transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari for completing this project so efficiently and then rode in an open car to greet a large number of people that had gathered along the road after today’s event.
