Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appearing before the Surat court today in his comments over “Modi surname” has pleaded not guilty. A criminal case was filed against him when he said: “why do all thieves share the Modi surname“.

Rahul Gandhi, MP from Wayanad had uttered the remarks at a campaign rally at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13. As reported by News18, he had said, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. How come they all have Modi as a common surname? How come all thieves have Modi as a common surname?

BJP MLA Purnesh Modi had filed the complaint in May this year under IPC sections 499 and 500. These sections are related to criminal defamation. Chief Judicial Magistrate BH Kapadia was hearing the matter. Punresh Modi had said that the comments of Rahul Gandhi were a move to defame the entire Modi community.

BH Kapadia has set the December 10 as the date of the next hearing in this case. In the court, Rahul Gandhi had pleaded not guilty while his lawyers demanded the exemption of personal appearance for the leader in the case. However, the lawyers of Punresh Modi raised strong objections on the matter. therefore the court said that it will decide on the plea on December 10.

Interestingly, Rahul Gandhi has also been slapped with two more defamation cases on his comments against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
