In order save the travel time, the Indian Railways for the first time has decided to get two engines fitted, one each in front and back, of a passenger train. The railway will hold the trials with the special Rajdhani train from Bandra Terminus route to the national capital’s Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station.

According to reports, the new two-engine technique was reportedly successful with the goods trains.A decision to carry out the trial with “push and pull” technique was taken at a railway committee meeting convened by Central Railway general manager D K Sharma.

Officer Ravinder Bhakar said the engines will be attached at both ends although loco pilots will be deployed in the front locomotive to carry the operations. The railways will also upgrade the technical systems to get a perfect synchronization between the locomotives for speed and braking. How much travel time will be saved is to be observed after the trials, he said.

Recently, the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express that takes 16 hours, was upgraded to “Gold” standards under Indian Railways Operation Swarn for premium trains. The Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani route is a crucial one for Indian Railways as it connects two of the most important cities in the country. The Railway Board has recently cleared a plan to fence around 500 km of the over 1,300 km route.

An official report says that the travel will be reduced by 30-60 minutes. Presently, the locomotives are attached in the back end in the ghat sections. According to reports, the technique will have an impact on the train’s acceleration and deceleration.
