Amidst the furor caused by the Hindi imposition news, Sadhguru Yogi posts a clip from his video. The video, “Bharat: What makes us a Nation?” was published back in 2014. Dr. Kiran Bedi converses with Sadhguru Yogi in this video. However, just a part of it has now been posted on his Facebook account renamed as “India must be renamed”.
The video was posted on June 2, 2019, and has more than 1.3M views and has been shared by 19k people. This short video looks like an attempt to make the officials realize the diversity that this nation has. The fact that India has always been culturally diverse also made it culturally rich. Even before the country was enslaved, it was a culturally diverse land with heterogeneous groups living together. What bonded people was not their sameness but their differences.
Sadhguru Yogi also tells that he is not going to learn any Hindi because their sameness doesn’t bind them together. The fact that he is different from someone else, gives him an identity, unique to him. He feels that the sense of nationhood has to be instilled in the minds and heart of people and that can be done only by changing the name of the country. “India should be renamed to something that has meaning and strength that reverberates into every Indian.”
In comparison to Hindi, English is spoken by only a few percents of the people. But in comparison to Hindi, the population speaking different languages is far more. The choice should be left to people to decide, otherwise instead of binding the country, it will be further divided.
