While addressing students at an Osmania University Library event in Hyderabad on Friday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury urged the Chief Ministers of 13 states not to execute the proposed NPR (National Population Register) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

As quoted by ANI, he said, “We are appealing 13 CMs not to implement NRC and NPR. All the secular forces in the country should come together in this struggle.”

Speaking more on the controversial legislation, Yechury accused the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party of spreading lies over the CAA issue. The leader also mentioned that Kerala has already announced its decision to stay away from the implementation of the NRC and NPR.

The CPI-M leader has been very vocal about the CAA and NRC and NPR right from the moment it was discussed in the parliament. The leader has previously also condemned the statements of Army general Bipin Rawat who said that leadership is not right when it takes you out on streets for the wrong purpose. He shared a message on Twitter urging the government to consider the statements and do the needful. His message read- We urge that the General apologizes to the nation for his indiscretion which has extremely adverse ramifications for the Constitutional arrangement in the country. We also demand that the government takes note of such a breach and censures the General.”
