The Indian honor system is the system of awards given to individuals for a variety of services to the republic of India.From specialist in music to the wildlife conservation,six persons from Tamil Nadu have secured their place for their outstanding work in a range of fields of the Padma awards list announced by the ministry of home affairs.
Padma Awards
These were instituted in the year 1954.Except for interruptions during few years ,these awards have been announced every year on the occasion of Republic day .
The award is given in three categories-
PADMA VIBHUSHAN
PADMA BHUSHAN
PADMA SHRI
PADMA VIBHUSHAN is given for exceptional and distinguished service and is second highest civilian award in India .
PADMA BHUSHAN is given for distinguished service of a high order and is third highest civilian award of India.
PADMA SHRI is given for distinguished service and is last and fourth highest civilian award of India.
Bharat Ratna is highest civilian award of the country.
Awardees of Tamil Nadu
This year from Tamil Nadu six people received Padma awards.Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami greeted the Padma awardees from the state.
1.Very famous music maestro ILAIYARAAJA received Padma VIBHUSHAN award he has composed songs over 1000 movies in several languages.
2.Having served as the Director of the Tamil Nadu archaeology department, Ramachandran Nagaswamy,received Padma bhushan award, he initiated the famous Chidambaram Natyanjali festival .
3.At 98 years of age, V NANAMMAL from Coimbatore regarded as one of the oldest yoga teachers in the country received the Padma Shri she has trained lakhs of students.
4.Well known as “the plastic kan of India” 72 year old R. Vasudevan ,dean,This harakar college of engineering , Madurai received Padma award for his innovation.
5.Romulas Whitaker founder of the madras snake park,who also set up the Madras crocodile Bank trust,has been awarded the Padma Shri for his work in wildlife conservation.
6.Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan,an acclaimed tamil folk artists has been recognised for the Padma Shri for the collection, documentation and preservation of Tamil folk and tribal music .
