Making affordable electrical appliances more accessible, government is now working with petrol pumps to provide low cost LED bulbs, tube lights and ceiling fans. State-run petrol pumps, including HP, Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum will sell LED bulbs for ₹65, tube-lights for ₹230 and ceiling fans for ₹1150.

State-run electrical appliances manufacturer, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will provide the products to the three mentioned oil companies which have over 53,000 fuel outlets across the country. EESL was supposed to sign an MoU with the petroleum companies, however, death of a union cabinet minister postponed the proceedings.

EESL and Oil companies will soon announce the new date for signing MoU and once the formalities are done, the appliances will be available within a month. EESL has been instrumental in supporting government’s initiative of efficient lighting. It provided LED bulbs for as low as ₹38 through bulk shipments.

However, there is no clarity yet on the number of petrol pumps where this service will be available from the beginning. But sources claim that the focus will be on tier 2 and tier 3 cities in the beginning.
