Supreme Court of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Chief Justice of India JS Khehar, announced a scheme to digitise all the courts in the coming months. The first step of this will include paperless filings of appeals in supreme court from July 3.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister congratulated Chief Justice and his team for the step to digitise the courts and added that the courts have shown amazing work commitments in the recent times. He also added that several high courts across the country have reduced the number of holidays and that shows the commitment for the work. This helps the common citizen in getting speedy justice from the higher courts.

Justice JS Khehar stated that the idea of digitising the courts came when he took oath as the supreme judge of the apex court. Government’s sanction of ₹2,130 crores for e-court mission also strengthened the initiative.

Out of the sanctioned amount, the courts have spent only ₹88 crores till December 2016. CJI said that there is an urgent need to accelerate the project of digitisation and requested for the government’s support to implement the desired changes.

Once the digitisation completes, the petitioners will be able to file their petitions online and will be notified of all the case related proceedings by email and SMS. This will save a lot of paper and added cost.
