TelanganaKCR swears in Mahmood Ali as Home Minister

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Supremo K Chandrashekhar Rao sprang a surprise on everyone by allotting the Home portfolio to Mohammad Mahmood Ali.

Ali,66, has been a prominent Muslim face of TRS. He was also vital in the Telangana movement of 2001. He was the only minister to take oath along with the party chief KCR yesterday.

Ali is a businessman from Hyderabad and had contested in 2009 from the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat. He suffered a defeat but was made a member of the Legislative Council.

Since the size of the state cabinet can’t exceed 18, Ali might remain the only Muslim in the cabinet.

During the first term of TRS reign, the Home portfolio was with Nayani Narasimha Reddy. And Ali was the Deputy Chief Minister in the previous cabinet. The other deputy to KCR was a Dalit leader, Kadiyam Srihari.

TRS leaders interpret Ali being picked before others as KCR’s attempt to highlight the importance being given to the Muslim community by the party.

TRS has received support from several Muslim organizations including the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

KCR had reportedly invited AIMIM to join the government in the state but the request was declined.
