In a step towards women empowerment, the Kerala police got its “first all-woman battalion with 578 members”. In the battalion, 44 members have received commando training, reported NDTV.

The passing out parade was held at the Kerala Police Academy ground attended by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Mr Behera and Police Academy Director ADGP B. Sandhya amongst others. The CM took the salute at the parade.

CM Vijayan addressed the battalion and said that the newly formed team should stand for “secularism” and “women empowerment”. The Kerala government has been taking various measures to seek gender equality. To ensure the same, 25% representation will be kept for women in the police force. The women in the Kerala police force are only 15% currently told the CM.

Superintendent of Police R. Nishanthini is the commandant of the first woman battalion.

In 2017, plans for an all-women battalion were initiated in Thiruvananthapuram. The Kerala government allotted 10 acres of land at Menamkulam at Kazhakuttam for the training of the women.

The 44 women commando were trained for nine months at Kerala police’s training academy in Ramavarmapuram, Thrissur. Besides basic training, these commandos have also received special training from experts like the NSG and the Kerala Thunderbolts, reported News18.

The CM tweeted, “In addition to basic training, the members of the battalion have been trained in kalaripayattu, karate, firing, weapons, swimming, yoga, driving, computers, soft skills, forest operations and handling issues of women, children and transgenders,” reported NDTV.

Talking to News18, one recruit said, “We are trying to break the stereotype that women cops are weaker than their male counterparts.”
