MNPTRAI speeds up number portability process

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI), which is the regulator of the telecommunications sector in India, has revamped the Mobile Number Portability (MNP)regulations. The move will make the entire process of MNP faster and simpler than before.

Limited timeline for porting

For MNP requests within the Intra-Licensed Service Area (Intra-LSA) or the same circle, the timeline has been set at 2 working days.

And for MNP requests in an Inter-Licensed Service Area (Inter-LSA) or a different circle, the timeline has been kept at 4 working days.

Telecom operators liable to pay a fine up to 10,000 for each wrongful rejection of the request

If any access provider or MNP service provider contravenes the provisions, it shall be liable to pay a fine, by way of financial disincentive not exceeding Rs 10,000 for each wrongful rejection of the request for porting.

For Corporate Porting: Limit of numbers in a single authorization letter doubled

The TRAI circular said that the present limit allowing only 50 mobile phone numbers in a single authorization letter has been enhanced to 100 for corporate porting.

Unique porting code (UPC) only for eligible numbers

The Unique porting code (UPC) would now be generated only for the mobile numbers that meet the eligibility criteria set by TRAI.

Earlier, the eligibility conditions were not checked during an MNP request and only after four days, the reason for rejection was revealed to the subscriber.

The validity period of UPC shortened

TRAI has shortened the validity period of Unique Porting Code (UPC) to four days instead of 15 days for all Licensed Service Area (LSA) except the LSAs of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and North East.

6 months to implement the changes

Within six months, the telecom industry has to implement the changes. TRAI will also issue the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters to monitor MNPSPs (Mobile Number Portability Service Providers) and Access Providers.
