Veteran actress Shammi, best remembered for her role in the Nineties sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh, died in Mumbai on Tuesday. She was 89.

Big B was one of the first celebs to mourn “Shammi Aunty” :

Amitabh Bachchan, who shared screen space with the actress in 1992 film Khuda Gawah, was one of the first celebs to mourn “Shammi Aunty” (as she was popularly known as) on Twitter. From Big B’s tweet, it appears the actress may have been suffering from prolonged illness. “Shammi Aunty… prolific actress, years of contribution to the industry, dear family friend… passes away. A long suffered illness, age. Sad. Slowly, slowly they all go away,” tweeted Amitabh Bachchan.

Shammi Aunty : 

Shammi (1929 – 6 March 2018) born Nargis Rabadi was an Indian film actress who appeared in over two hundred Hindi films. Shammi remained a sought-after with filmmakers when it came to goofy and comic roles, especially in the period 1949-1969 and later from 1980-2002. Her famous films as supporting actress included Dil Apna Aur Preet ParaiHalf TicketHalakuSamaj Ko Badal Dalo,Khuda GawahCoolie No. 1Gopi Kishan and Hum Saath Saath Hain and films with Rajesh Khanna like The TrainAanchalKudratRed Rose (film)Awara Baap and Swarg. She had been a leading actress playing main female lead or second female lead in Hindi films between 1949-1955 as well. Later, from 1986 till 1998, she appeared in many popular television serials such as Dekh Bhai DekhZabaan Sambhal KeShriman ShrimatiKabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh and Filmi Chakkar. Shammi was married to film producer director Sultan Ahmed for seven years, before they were divorced. Shammi is the younger sister of fashion designer Mani Rabadi.

Politician Priya Dutt, Sanjay Dutt’s sister, also remembered the veteran actress on Twitter. Shammi was a family friend of Sanjay Dutt’s parents – Nargis and Sunil Dutt. “Shammi, aunty to me and a great actor of yesteryears, passed away today. She was my mother’s dear friend and someone we all loved very much. May her soul rest in peace and her laughter and contagious smile rock the heavens. Be in peace with your friends,” tweeted Priya Dutt.
