We will not allow narcotics trade in India, nor allow drugs to be routed to world through India: Home minister

Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics adopted by the Ministry of Home Affairs is showing successful results today. He said that it is our resolve that we will not allow the narcotics trade in India, nor will we allow drugs to be routed to the world through India.

In his message on the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”, the Union Home Minister said that on the occasion of “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” today on 26th June, I congratulate all the organizations and people fighting against drugs. It is a matter of great pleasure that this time also the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is organizing ‘Nasha Mukt Pakhwada’ at all India level.

In the fight against drugs, all major agencies, particularly the “Narcotics Control Bureau,” are consistently engaged in their efforts. In order to reinforce this campaign, the Ministry of Home Affairs established NCORD in 2019, and the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) was established within the police departments of each state. The first national conference of ANTF took place in April 2023 in Delhi.

Amit Shah emphasized that a nationwide effort is underway to combat drug misuse and its harmful effects through appropriate platforms. The comprehensive and coordinated approach against drugs has yielded significant results. The value of seized drugs has escalated from Rs.768 crore between 2006-2013 to approximately Rs.22,000 crore between 2014-2022, marking an increase of almost 30 times. Furthermore, there has been a 181% rise in cases registered against drug peddlers compared to previous years. These statistics demonstrate the commitment of the Modi government to achieving a drug-free India. In June 2022, a campaign was launched to destroy seized drugs and prevent their reuse, resulting in the destruction of approximately 6 lakh kg of narcotics nationwide.

The minister said that whether it is about destroying the drug cultivation or spreading public awareness, the Ministry of Home Affairs in coordination with all institutions and states, is making every possible effort for a “drug free India”, but this battle cannot be won without people’s participation.

The minister appealed to all citizens to distance themselves and their families from drugs. Not only do drugs hollow out the younger generation and society, but the profits from drug smuggling are also utilized against national security. The minister urged the public to actively engage in the fight against drug misuse and to inform security agencies about any drug-related activities in their vicinity.

Amit Shah expressed his confidence that with collective efforts, the problem of drugs can be eradicated, and the goal of a “Drug-Free India” can be achieved.
