The repercussions of the barbaric act by the British colonial on hundreds of Indians are still afresh in every Indian’s wounds. The heinous act committed by Britain resulted in extreme mass killing. One of the worst atrocities of the British Colonial rule. The Jallianwala Bagh incident is one of the darkest chapters of India’s struggle for freedom against the colonial rule.

India marks the 100th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre today. In a tribute to the lost lives, The Punjab government held a Candlelight vigil on April 12 and a  day-long observance on April 13. It will be attended by Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh. Delhi will commemorate a Jallianwala Bagh Centenary exhibition by The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT). It will open at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts on April 13. Rahul Gandhi laid a wreath at the memorial last night in Golden temple praying for the lost lives.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that British has not yet asked for forgiveness for the crime that they committed. He expressed disgust at the British prime minister saying that Theresa May described the massacre as “a shameful scar” on British Indian History but stopped short of an apology for despicable exercise.

Former British Prime minister on his visit to Amritsar in 2013, described the incident as “deeply shameful” but there was no apology from his end.

The chief minister said that an apology from the British is necessary for the country to develop more trust and move on. It will give us a reason to believe that the colonial ruling country has empathized with the innocent people who lost their lives at the expense of their leader.

The preposterous act took place on April 13, 1919, when India was a British colony. The independence fight by the Indian leaders had provoked the Britishers to ban the public gathering and processions to prevent any conspiracies against them. April 13 is celebrated as the new year by Sikhs and is celebrated as Baisakhi all over Punjab. Therefore, the people decided to celebrate it in Jallianwala Bagh where thousands of farmers, traders, devotees flourished. The confidential gathering information reached Colonel Dyer who ordered his troops to fire. The unpardonable act cost India hundreds of innocent lives.
