Are you a nature lover? Then you will be delighted to know that there are several places in Bengaluru to enjoy the nature and one among such place is Sankey Tank. Lakes are other beauty spots of Bengaluru. Sankey Tank is the largest man-made lake or artificial tank situated in western part of Bengaluru city. The water body is vast and center of attraction for the tourists.
The Englishman Col. Richard Hieram Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment created this tank in the year 1882, to satisfy the water supply demands of Bangalore. The State Forest Department takes care of this lake. The area covered by the Sankey Tank is approximately 37.1acres. Sankey tank was known as Gandhadhakotikere as a government sandalwood stock was situated close to the lake. The Sankey reservoir was constructed at a cost of 5, 75,000 rupees during that period.
The tank, which was until recently neglected, has been converted from its primary function as a reservoir to a park by the Bangalore Water supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP). This huge lake environment is suffused with lots of green trees. Its a nice place to go on weekends when you don’t have much to do. The crowd is decent and the best part is, the entire area is clean. Foodstuffs are not allowed inside and that’s the reason it is clean. A special tank for idol immersion during Ganesh Chaturthi has been constructed and during Ganesha Visarjan it goes a bit over-crowded. Its nice to see people jogging, walking and trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Good place to unwind and get away from the usually crowded Bengaluru.
In Sankey tank you can enjoy the sunset, landscape, musical fountain, all these attractions make Sankey tank one of the best places to visit in Bangalore. You can do many activities here like Boating, swimming, walk through the pavements, see parks and landscapes and click very good photographs.
Here are beautiful seats for giving you some breathing time. You can walk, breathe easy and you can hear chirping of the birds and go home completely relaxed. This place used to be much more wooded and green than it is now, there used to be boating facilities which were a nice change to the usual. The addition of a separate tank for Ganesha immersion is a very thoughtful addition. It is a perfect place for a walk as an exercise as well as an morning/evening stroll with friends/family.
