Opposition candidate for the Presidential Elections due on July 17, Meira Kumar was in West Bengal on Tuesday for her election campaign. She held meetings with Congress, Trinamool Congress and Left MLAs.

Though all these parties have assured their support to Meira, a few MLAs who left Congress and joined TMC have not made their stand clear on the point. Some time back, 9 MLAs of Congress had left the party and joined the Trinamool Congress. These MLAs somehow managed to skip the meeting held with Meira Kumar.

Former state Congress president Manas Bhunia, who joined TMC, in his statement to ET said that, he was busy preparing for TMC’s rally which will be held on Wednesday and hence could not attend he meeting. But he has assured that he will be supporting the Opposition’s candidate. Though other MLAs preferred to avoid the question, not wanting to give any specific reasons for their absence from the meeting.

Another MLA among the 9 MLAs said that, he was not sure if he would participate in the President elections and vote for anyone, nut if his party asked him to vote for Meira Kumar, he would surely do that.

The non-NDA candidate Meira Kumar is likely to get votes of all the 294 MLAs in the state Assembly, though the support of six legislature, comprising of 3 BJP MLAs and 3 GJM MLAs is still doubtful.
