AAP MLA Alka Lamba was reportedly asked to resign from the party after a controversy erupted over a resolution in the Delhi Assembly seeking withdrawal of the Bharat Ratna awarded to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Leader and MLA from Chandni Chowk Alka Lamba on Friday was asked to tender her resignation after a controversy erupted in the Delhi Assembly over resolution seeking withdrawal of Bharat Ratna awarded to Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Sources said that controversy erupted after Lamba allegedly made ‘last minute’  changes to the resolution, on 1984 anti-Sikh riots, by adding mentions to Gandhi. The alleged additions to the resolution sought to withdraw the Bharat Ratna over the former PM’s comments on the 1984 riots.

Earlier, The Delhi Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution to withdrawal Bharat Ratna given to Rajiv Gandhi but later distanced itself from the reference of Gandhi in the Resolution.

While Contrary to AAP’s allegations, Alka Lamba said she had instead opposed the inclusion of that ‘part’ in the Resolution. Today, there was a proposal in the assembly to seek withdrawal of Bharat Ratna award to former PM Rajiv Gandhi. In my speech in the House, I was asked to support this motion. I did not agree and staged a walk out of the House. Now I am ready to face whatever punishment,” she said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Resolution that was moved by MLA Jarnail Singh said, “Delhi Assembly today declared 1984 anti-Sikh Riots as worst genocide in the History of India’s National Capital, In a resolution that has been passed today we have demanded from the Centre that Bharat Ratna awarded to him should be withdrawn”

AAP Spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said Lines about the Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were not a part of Resolution placed before the House and distributed to the Members of Assembly. ‘One MLA in his handwriting made an addition about the Rajiv Gandhi. Amendments cannot be passed in this manner.

There was also a controversy over the resolution seeking withdrawal of Bharat Ratna was passed or not. The leader of the opposition and BJP MLA, Dr. Vijendra Gupta said, the resolution was passed on a voice vote, AAP leaders said that the part about Rajiv Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna was “an amendment”, which had not been originally passed.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Ajay Maken also voiced his opinion. He criticized the move in a tweet.
