Congress is intensely gearing up with its election campaign for the next General Elections due in 2019. It is trying hard to get as many votes as possible to their side in all the states.

Recently, Congress has begun a meticulous cadre-building exercise in Telangana. The party has started a statewide exercise of identifying leaders in 119 Assembly constituencies of Telangana. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has appointed K Raju, in charge of the party’s Scheduled Caste department to carry out this exercise.

A similar exercise was conducted during the polls in Uttar Pradesh. Raju has formed a team of members comprising Raju’s team member Shashank Shukla, three persons who were earlier a part of Prashant Kishor’s IPAC team in UP and state’s SC cell leaders.

The main task of the team will be to identify the probable leaders to contest the polls. Coordinators are appointed in each of the 119 Assembly constituencies of the state and are asked to work out on the root level to select the members who possess the qualities to become a good leader.

These selected leaders will then have to perform in order to get selected further. They will be given different tasks over the next 18 months to judge their organisational skills and mass movements. Following this exercise, a report will be prepared on the basis of each of the leaders’ performance in the past 18 months and this will also help the party in creating a resource bank.

In his statement to ET Raju said that “The party would choose its candidates for the next election from this resource pool. Those who are not chosen as official candidates would be given other organisational responsibilities.”
