Former Union Minister and current Delhi Congress Chief, Ajay Maken, was reported to have resigned from the post according to some news reports earlier today. Denying those claims by some media reports, party in-charge of Delhi affairs, PC Chakho tweeted, ”Ajay Maken has some health problem and has gone for a medical check-up. He has temporarily stepped down for his check-up and informed me and the Congress president (Rahul Gandhi). He’ll be back next week and probably he’s little worried that he can’t devote full time or travel the way he wants”. He further added that after Ajay Maken returns from abroad that the working arrangement will be discussed.
Congress also issued an official confirmation to ANI, which said, “Delhi Congress President Ajay Maken has not resigned. He has some health issues and has gone for a check-up. He will be back soon. He had recently met party President Rahul Gandhi and party in-charge of Delhi affairs PC Chacko.”
Ajay Maken has led the party in the capital since 2015 replacing Arvind Singh Lovely as Delhi Congress chief. Back in 2017, Ajay Maken had submitted his resignation to former party president, Sonia Gandhi after a poor performance of Congress in Delhi Civic Polls. However, on the request of Mr. Rahul Gandhi who was the party Vice-President then, he revoked his resignation. 54-year-old Ajay Maken is one of the senior leaders of Congress and reports of his resignation might be a blow for the party ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He had started his political career as the president of Delhi University student’s union at the age of 21. Since then it was no looking back for him. He has been a two-time member of Lok Sabha and a three-time member of Legislative Assembly. Besides this, he was also the youngest union cabinet minister from Congress party for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and the youngest speaker in the country.
