Congress has a clear majority in the state of Punjab. In an assembly of 117 seats, it won 77 seats. Aam Aadmi Party scored second with 20 seats and the coalition of Shiromani Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janata Party won 18 seats.

After meeting the governor, in his interaction with the media, Amarinder Singh said that a few members in the cabinet will also be taking oath alongside him on 16th, however, he did not give any more details on who the cabinet ministers will be. He also kept silence when asked about the role of Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had left BJP to join congress days before the elections started in Punjab. There are however, rumors that Navjot Singh Sidhu might become the deputy CM, a confirmation on this is awaited.
