Massive clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers ahead of the mega roadshow held by BJP president Amit Shah in Kolkata. The Calcutta university Trinamool congress student body protested against the BJP chief’s rally. The scene at the rally was disastrous while the furious students threw the stones and bottles at the rally followed by attacks of BJP supporters.

Targeting the BJP president, Calcutta students raised slogan against Amit Shah shouting ‘Amit Shah go back’ and showed black flags as the BJP roadshow passed infront of the gates of the university. The protest provoked the BJP workers and the supporters resulting in utter chaos while ealing with the agitated students.

The BJP workers later alleged that the West Bengal police helped the students to cross the barricade that was set between the university gate and the streets leading to the massive breakout between the two parties.

The police later shut the doors of the university campus and the BJP supporters left the site to the closing of the roadshow. A scuffle also broke out between two groups near the Vidyasagar college where three bikes were allegedly set on fire by the Bharatiya Janata Party supporters.

Earlier in the day, the war of words was exchanged between the two parties after poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah were removed from key locations in Kolkata a few hours before the rally. BJP alleged that TMC workers are behind the incident and the senior party leader Kailash Vijayvergiya said that the goons of Mamata Banerjee were responsible for the removal of the posters and flags of BJP.

Trinamool Congress dismissed the allegations made by BJP claiming that BJP is getting more and more desperate in Bengal.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, West Bengal has seen a war of words between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

West Bengal has witnessed polling in the six phases of Lok Sabha elections. The remaining Lok Sabha seats will go to polls in the seventh and last phase of  the Lok Sabha elections. The results will be announced on May 23.
