Assam Congress Gen Secy Kamrul Islam Choudhury quits party, cites 'directionless, confused leadership of APCC'

In a major blow to Congress and adding to the slew of resignations, General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Kamrul Islam Choudhury has resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party citing “directionless and confused leadership” as the reason.

Choudhury took to Twitter to post his resignation letter online. He tweeted, “I do hereby tender my resignation from the post of GS @INCAssam and primary membership of @INCIndia.”

“Heartfelt thanks to you and INC leadership for giving me the chance to represent INC at different positions i.e., National General Secretary of NSUI, President APYC and General Secretary APCC. But the present instability of the Congress party in Assam due to the directionless and confused leadership of APCC during the last few months has left no reason for me to continue as a member of INC,” Choudhury stated in his letter.

In his letter addressed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Choudhury also expressed displeasure over cross-voting by Congress MLAs during Presidential elections and party’s inability to deal with the situation.

He mentioned that even the Assam Congress president Bhupen Bora was aware of the issue of MLAs cross-voting, and had called them ‘GADDAR’. He added that “thousands of grass-root workers like me” have given “blood and sweat for the party for years”.

Choudhury was earlier the National Secretary of National Student Union of India (NSUI), Congress’ student wing and president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC).

Since the beginning of the year, and more so in the past few months, Congress has seen resignations from prominent leaders while some have also quit the party. The departure of the General Secretary of the APCC comes days after Congress veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad quit the party and ended his five-decade-long affiliation with the party.

In his scathing five-page resignation letter, Ghulam Nabi Azad opined that the entire consultative mechanism was demolished by Rahul Gandhi when he took over as Congress vice-president in 2013.
