AssamBJP does better than Congress at Assam local polls

Despite the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which believed to have weakened BJP’s support base, the party still has managed to win over the people of Assam. This is evident from the results of the Assam Panchayat polls which reveal that BJP bagged 50 percent more seats than the main opposition Congress.

The first phase of voting was held on December 5 and the second phase on December 9. The counting began on this Wednesday. The state registered overall 82 percent voting.

As per the results shared by the Assam State Election Commission(SEC):

For Assam Gaon Panchayat Member (GPM)

  • BJP:  7,769
  • Congress :5,896,
  • BJP alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP): 1,372,
  • All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF): 755
  • Others: 2,112.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     For Zila Parishad Members
  • BJP secured: 223
  • Congress: 139
  • AGP: 18
  • AIUDF: 24
  • Others: 12

For Anchalik Panchayat Members (APM)

  • BJP : 910
  • Congress: 656
  • AGP: 122
  • AIUDF: 122
  • Others:134.

For Gaon Panchayat President (GPP)

  •  BJP: 940
  •  Congress: 662
  • AGP: 114
  • AIUDF: 113
  • Others: 167 seats

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal released a statement on Friday. It said that the results have shown that people have believed in the good governance of both the central and state governments.

He further congratulated the winners and appealed to the winning candidates to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system of Assam and deliver public services in a clean and transparent manner.
