Two students from Jammu and Kashmir were assaulted in Haryana recently,  to much curiosity. The students were allegedly attacked by a mob in Mahendragarh. Three accused have been taken into custody and a complaint has been filed by the police to the SIT to investigate the matter.

The attack in Mahendragarh

The students attacked were; Aftab Ahmed and Amjad Ali who are both in their twenties. The two are students at the Central University in Haryana. The assault occurred when they were returning to the campus after their Friday prayers. They suffered many injuries and said that the attack was unprovoked.

The police say that the same mob had attacked other Muslims on the same day. The superintendent of Police said that the attack was directed at the muslim men and the two students were ‘mistakenly’ attacked. The two accused were involved in other similar attacks and belong to a group of 10. They had taken part in attacks in different locations. The two students the accused claim were mistaken to belong to the group of muslim men they intended on attacking.

The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, expressed her concern and distress over the matter. She demanded action against the accused.  The two students have expressed that the police is distorting facts as to how the attack took place. They said that the two incidents were unrelated, that they knew nothing about the other muslim men.  A thorough investigation of the matter still needs to take place. Mahendragarh’s Deputy Commissioner Garima Mittal has assured the students that action would be taken against the accused.

The matter, therefore, doesn’t end here. Even if the accused were involved in other attacks and had mistakenly attacked the two students, it still raises questions. The fact that they were going around attacking groups, should be cause for worry. This case doesn’t just question the safety in India of those who are from Jammu and Kashmir. It also concerns the safety of the laymen not only in Haryana but within India as well.
