The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday knocked the State Election Commission with a complaint against Congress Candidate for Panaji by-polls Atanasio Monserratte for allegedly violating the mandatory provision of the Poll Body.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a letter alleged Congress nominee of not following the prescribed norms by not publishing the details of criminal cases in the print and electronic media.

In a letter to Chief Electoral Officer of the tiniest state Goa, BJP State Chief Vinay Tendulkar said, “Congress Candidate Atanasio Monserratte in its nomination papers has declared the criminal cases in form 26 before returning officer, but, He has not published the criminal cases pending in the electronic and print media, as prescribed by the EC’s norms”.

The letter gave reference to Supreme Court verdict of 2011 that made mandatory for candidates and political parties to publish three times on different dates, the details of the criminal cases pending against him through electronic and print media.

Tendulkar further stated that the Poll Body should take strong cognizance of the complaint and demands a strict action. It is further stated that ‘the former state minister Atanasio Monserratte has violated the certain provision of the EC Norms by not following the Top Court Verdict.

The By-polls in the Panaji Assembly necessitated after the seat fell vacant after the death of former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The by-polls in the seat is slated for May 19, and results will be announced on May 23 along with with the results of national elections 2019.

The Bharatiya Janata Party for the by-polls named Sidharth Kuncalienker as its candidate for by-polls. The ruling party denied ticket to former chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar who was among those shortlisted by the party for the by-polls.

Late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had represented the seat many times since 1994. He had last won an election from the seat was in 2017 by-polls. He had defeated Girish Chodankar of Congress with a margin of 4 thousand votes.
