Amethi, May 4 (IANS) Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of giving Rs 20,000 bribes to people in Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

While addressing a gathering here, Gandhi said: “This is wrong… While Congress is distributing its election manifesto, the BJP is sending Rs 20,000 each to the village heads.”

She said that the BJP is under the misconception that it can buy the people’s love and the practice of truthful politics in Amethi.

She said: “The BJP’s intentions are bad and their policies are limited to benefitting some industrialists. They don’t waive off farmers’ debt, but in five years the party has waived off the Rs 5.50 lakh crore debt of these industrialists.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is seeking a fourth term from the parliamentary seat. Rahul Gandhi has entered the Lok Sabha for the First time in 2004 contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha Seat. Amethi in the past has been represented by Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. Accept the year 1977, and 1998, Amethi has always elected a Congress Nominee.

In a run-up to the mega elections, Rahul Gandhi is taking on Smriti Irani. In 2014 General Elections, Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi who gave a tough fight to Congress President. The Margin of winning that used to be over 2-3 lakhs in past was reduced to just 1 Lakh in previous polls.

General Elections 2019 is being held across seven phases starting April 11 to May 19. Amethi to elect a new Member of Parliament will poll on May 6 in the fifth phase of polling.

Besides Amethi, Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Kerala’s Wayanad parliamentary constituency.
