Congress’ Atanasio Monserratte on Thursday won Panaji Assembly seat, held by the late
chief minister Manohar Parrikar by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party Candidate Sidharth Kuncalienker with a margin of over 1,775 votes in the by-poll held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections.

Monserrate secured 8748 votes against 6990 of Kuncalienker.

The By-polls in the Panaji Assembly necessitated after the seat fell vacant after the death of former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had represented the seat many times since 1994. He had last won an election from the seat was in 2017 by-polls. He had defeated Girish Chodankar of Congress with a margin of 4 thousand votes.
