Bhartiya Janata Party has assured its support to Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on issues other than a separate state. Over the last 3 weeks, Gorkhas have been protesting against the current West Bengal government and have been demanding for a separate state named Gorkhaland. Though West Bengal government has led no ears to GJM, they were hoping for a positive news from their partners, BJP.

If the reports are to be believed, BJP has completely distanced itself from any such demands in the hills. However, BJP has assured of actions taken on the other demands on GJM, which have been under consideration for years now. One of them include granting tribal status to a few communities of Gorkhas.

A delegation of GJM representatives, is set to meet Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh, next week in Delhi. With this meeting being announced, GJM is quite hopeful of getting its demands approved. The central government is in support of granting more powers to GJM in the hills. Bimal Gurung, the GJM chief has agreed to join talks with the government officials.

In his statement to ET, Kailash Vijaywargiya, BJP National Secretary stated that the party has all sympathy for GJM and its issues. Though BJP is not in favour of granting a separate state, it will surely figure out on ways to help GJM with the other demands. He also added that the Mamata Banerjee led administration has failed to address the situation carefully and the police action will not solve the ongoing unrest.
