Communal riots broke in Basirhat in North 24-Parganas district earlier in June after an objectionable post on social media. Mamata Banerjee-led government earlier had accused BJP of provoking the people to begin riots in the region. She even established ‘Shanti Vahini’ at booth level to keep a check on people who are misleading the locals and spreading rumors.

BJP has also been blaming Mamata for the riots saying that Banerjee is practicing minority appeasement policy. Following the riots in West Bengal, BJP on Thursday launched a ‘Save Bengal’ campaign from Rajghat in New Delhi, protesting against Banerjee government saying that there has been a constitutional breakdown in the state.

Union ministers Smriti Irani, Harsh Vardhan, and BJP general secretary and Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya were present for the campaign. BJP accused Bengal government of targeting the Hindus in the region. Vijayvargiya alleged that people were murdered and burnt alive. He also added that a team of BJP MPs had reached the place to visit the riot free area but they were stopped by the police personals to even enter the region.

During the campaign BJP members demonstrated a sit in opposite Rajghat, they carried placards and shouted slogans against West Bengal Chief Minister.

BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said that the campaign was launched to make the people aware of the situation in Bengal and also win the confidence of people of Bengal that if the need arose they will also come to Bengal for their support. She also accused Mamata Banerjee of using two-fold politics of appeasement and repression in the state.
