In a major setback to the Bhartiya Janta Party on Saturday, its sitting MP from Allahabad now known as Prayagraj Shyama Charan Gupta shifted loyalties back to Samajwadi Party ahead of Lok Sabha Polls. Shyama Charan Gupta will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Banda as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

Accouncement about him changing political Outfit came hours before Bhartiya Janta Party set to announce its first lot of Candidates for the upcoming mega battle of ballots.

Gupta being a Candidate from Banda Lok Sabha seats will take on Bhartiya Janta Party’s and Congress‘ Candidate. Both BJP and INC has so far not declared their Candidates for the Banda Parliamentary seat.

The BSP and SP who has this time came together in an alliance had been the two main contenders in Banda for the last two decades. However, In 2014 General Elections, Banda went to BJP amidst heavy ‘Modi Wave’.

Gupta’s addition in the Akhilesh Yadav team is seen as a major boost for the party in the east part of the state which has a good amount of votes from Baniya Community.

Shyama Charan Gupta, A former Samajwadi Party man, had first time contested Parliamentary Elections in the year 1999 but had to face defeat from Mayawati‘s Bahujan Samaj Party. He later in 2004 General Elections defeated BSP Candidate on the same seat. Gupta in 2009 General Elections unsuccessfully contested from Phulpur Lok Sabha Seat.

However, he changed his outfit months before 2014 General Elections and joined the Bhartiya Janata Party. Gupta later won from Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj in 2014.

While his candidature from Banda Lok Sabha Constituency, Samajwadi Party who had inked a pre-poll alliance with BSP has now declared 17 candidates out of 37 seats allotted to it in alliance with BSP. Prior to this party has released four lists of  16 candidates in a run-up to general elections 2019.

General Elections are slated for April-May this year that would spread on Seven Phases starting from April 11 to May 19. Uttar Pradesh which has a total of 80 seats will go to polls in all seven phases starting from April 11.

Counting of votes will take place on May 23, four days after the final round of Polling.
