The ruling Bhartiya Janta Party on Friday registered a comfortable victory by seeping 66 sets out 67 in Tripura Civic bypolls. Voting across municipal bodies and Agartala Municipal Corporation took place on Thursday, which registered 81.36 percent cent voting and the results were announced on Friday.

All the four wards of the 49-member Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) were won by BJP candidates convincingly with two opposition parties – CPI (M) and Congress – lagging behind in vote share. The lone seat won by the CPI (M) candidate came from Panisagar Municipal Council but the BJP candidates declared victorious in remaining 10 seats of the 11-member civic body, Informed Tripura State Election Commission (TSEC).

The TSEC had announced the by-elections to the 158 seats in 14 municipal bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation. A senior official of the Tripura State Election Commission (TSEC) said BJP candidates won 66 of the 67 seats in the elections. The party had earlier won 91 seats unopposed.

Reacting on party’s Victory, BJP state president and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb thanked the voters saying that the mandate shows that the people still have faith on the BJP-IPFT led government. “I thank the people of #Tripura for blessing @BJP4India & giving us a massive victory in the Bye-Elections of Urban Local Bodies held in the state. Congratulations to all victorious candidates. Kudos to @BJP4Tripura karyakartas for ensuring this massive victory for the party.” he said in a tweet.

The CPI (M) state committee member Pabitra Kar, however, alleged, “There was absolutely no reason to conduct byelections which has become a farce process. The BJP-IPFT government could have been selected their leaders for the vacant Wards after elected CPI(M) members were forced to resign since the new government came to power.”
