Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran leader BS Yeddyurappa on Friday took oath as the 25th Chief Minister of Karnataka three days almost Congress-JDS coalition government collapsed after facing defeat in the trust vote in Assembly. With the swearing-in of BS Yeddyurappa as the new Chief Minister, Karnataka is back under saffron party rule.

The oath was administrated by the Governor Vajubhai Vala in an official ceremony which was boycotted by JD-S and Congress. Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also choose to stay away from the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister.

BS Yeddyurappa who was administrated oath by the Governor Vajubhai Vala for the fourth time. However, he was a lone one to take oath on Friday. He is expected to add ministers in his state cabinet once he will prove his majority in the House, which he has been asked to do by July 31.

However, Yeddyurappa is expected to prove his majority on Monday, next week.

Former Chief Minister SM Krishna, BJP General Secretary V Murlidhar Rao, party MPs Tejasvi Surya among others were present in the official ceremony. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Amit Shah congratulated Yeddyurappa and promised that BJP will give a stable government.

I am sure under his leadership and under the guidance of PM Modi, BJP will give a stable, pro-farmer and development-oriented govt in the State. I assure people of Karnataka that BJP is committed to fulfill their aspirations’, Shah said in a tweet.

Yeddyurappa first becomes the Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2007 however, the could only survive for 7 days after JD(S) withdrew support and President’s rule was imposed in the state. He again made way to the state top in 2008, but owing to corruption charges he could not complete his term.

He held the post from May 2008 to July 2011 and later resigned after the allegations of corruption in illegal land deregulation notification scam.

It should be noted after state polls in 2018, BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa stormed his way to the Top Post but had to resign a week later after his party failed to garnish support to prove majority.

BACKGROUND:

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy led coalition government on Tuesday fell after it suffered a defeat in the floor test of the assembly.

With 20 MLAs defying the party whip and were absent for the floor test, the strength of the 225-member Karnataka Assembly was reduced to 204 with 103 as the halfway mark for a simple majority.

The quick turn of events in the political circles of the state begun early this month with the resignation of 11 MLAs of Congress and Janata Dal (Secular). As the crisis deepens, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had on July 18 announced to hold a trust vote in the Assembly.
